Message to Sheffield Autistic Society from Helen Basu Chaudhuri (Doctoral Researcher) Psychology Department, Sheffield Hallam University):
Participants Wanted
Study of the relationship between anxiety, alexithymia (difficulty identifying and describing feelings) and awareness of internal sensations in autistic people.
I am looking for autistic volunteers as well as family members and non-autistic people.
I am looking for volunteers, with and without a diagnosis of autism, to take part in a study examining the relationship between anxiety, alexithymia (difficulty identifying and describing emotions) and awareness of internal sensations in autistic people. The questionnaire aims to examine internal bodily sensations (e.g. hunger, fullness, thirst, nausea, fatigue, pains and aches, heartbeat awareness and bodily warmth), and was developed with the assistance of autistic people.
Participation in this study will involve completing five short questionnaires online:
- 2 questionnaires about your awareness of your internal bodily sensations (e.g. hunger, fullness, thirst, nausea, aches and pains, heartbeat and bodily warmth)
- A questionnaire about your usual feelings of anxiety – this will be used to ensure that the internal bodily sensations questionnaire is not inadvertently measuring anxiety
- A questionnaire about health anxiety
- A questionnaire about your ability to identify and describe emotions
Data collected from the survey will also be used for the researcher’s dissertation as part of her PhD, presentations and reports published in academic journals.
No names will be recorded, and all data will be anonymous.
