April Newsletter 2025

Sheffield City Council Autism Festival – 15 to 17 April

The city is coming together for the first Sheffield Autism Festival  part of World Autism Acceptance Month, see the programme here: Autism Festival Programme 2025.

There will be a series of events and activities spread over the three days hosted across various venues near the city centre in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University. The festival aims to empower, support and celebrate Autistic people, improve others’ understanding of autism, and inspire action to make Sheffield a more autism friendly city.

Events and activities have been organised sensitively for Autistic people, with a quiet room and limited numbers of people. Speaker events will also be recorded and made available online after the festival. Here is the speaker programme:

Tickets are limited and bookable via Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/o/sheffield-cares-104233364621

Sheffield Autistic Society will have a stall at the Town Hall from 10am til 4pm on Tuesday

Our Art Wellbeing Group will be exhibiting their work at the Stoddart Building, Sheffield Hallam University (10 til 3) each day so please come along and see us!

Sheffield Neurodivergent Mums Group

We are a small self-run group of Mothers looking to reach out to other neurodivergent Mums who would be interested in joining us. Our main focus is as a social group, where like-minded people can build friendships and offer support to one another.

It has become apparent from speaking with our currently quite small group that many neurodivergent mothers are facing loneliness and isolation. We feel that creating a regular group they feel they belong to, and a place where they can make connections, is essential to their mental well-being.

2nd Annual JOY Workshop

I am excited to share that we have set the date for the 2nd Annual JOY Workshop. This workshop delves into the everyday experiences of people with learning disabilities, mental health conditions and autistic people and explores how the transformative dynamics of joy can foster a greater sense of connectedness.

To continue from the previous year and connect with other projects happening in the area this year, our theme is JOY in the Community. We have exciting plans, such as putting together a monograph and organising an exhibition. We will send more details by the end of March or early April.

Date: 2 May 2025

Venue: Sheffield Hallam University, City Campus, Owen Building, Hallam View

Please find attached a save-the-date card and posters. Please share the invitation with your colleagues and clients. Registration is required due to limited places. Please send your name, job role and organisation to A.Z.Goldschmied@shu.ac.uk or respond to this email. All attendees will receive a certificate.

The Stimming Pool is an experimental—at times fantastical—hybrid feature film, co-created by  a collective of autistic artists, the Neurocultures Collective, and filmmaker Steven Eastwood, who invite you into a neurodiverse world within the undulating logic of  neurotypical environments.

Given the subject matter of the film we are very keen to make sure that everyone with an interest in autism and neurodiversity knows about the film and the screenings, tickets for which are already on sale:

•          The Peer Support Service for parents/carers from Sheffield Parent Carer Forum

The Peer Support Service was created in response to feedback from parents of children and young people aged 0-25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Sheffield. Feedback clearly showed that there is a lack of support both before and after a child receives a diagnosis. Although the funding for the project has a focus on autism and other neurodevelopmental needs, our service is available for ALL families, with or without a diagnosis. We will continue to work closely with families in Sheffield, listening to their ideas and concerns, using these to shape the service going forward

If you would like a 1-1 appointment, please call our main number 0300 321 4721 and select option 1 for our Peer Support Service. Alternatively, please email peersupport@sheffieldparentcarerforum.org.uk

Take part in research
Autistic service users on an inpatient ward

Declan Downey is a Trainee Clinical Psychologist from Sheffield University. Declan is autistic and the research he is recruiting to is an important one.

I am currently looking for individuals who have both lived experience of being autistic and a history of being a service user on an inpatient ward, to collaborate on this study. It would be really helpful to get support with any of the following:

1) Developing the questions to ask participants in interviews
2) Thinking of how to make the study as accessible and ethical as possible
3) Taking part in practice interviews to feedback how this feels, prior to the rollout of interviews

If you would be interested in collaborating, please get in touch on ddowney2@sheffield.ac.uk. Or, if you would just like to ask some questions about the study in general, I’d also be really happy to hear from you 😊

 Join the A Team!

We have a number of regular activities which include a monthly meeting at a friendly city centre pub,  a monthly walk in the area, a monthly art/craft event, a fortnightly snooker club and a monthly online social group. We send out a weekly newsletter to members about activities that are coming up and wider events in Sheffield.
